What is a .Dotx file?
A .dotx file is a Microsoft Word Document TEMPLATE file that is reusable. The dotx is a file extension. It might look like this if your computer is set to show file extensions.

Why use a Dotx file and not Docx or Doc?
A .dotx is a Template file that Microsoft Office uses for Word Documents. They will not be edited when used properly. When you open a .dotx file from a folder on your computer it opens the file as a default .doc or .docx file instantly and you can edit that and the .dotx file is unedited and remains the same so you can't mess it up accidently, hence why they call it a Template File.

How to open a .dotx file?
To launch a .dotx file on your PC, go to the folder containing your files and double-click it. Always open a .dotx from your PC folders. When you click on it from your PC folders it will open the file as a .doc or .docx file automatically for you.

How NOT to open a .dotx file?
Do not open MS Word and then click Open and then search through your folders and open a .dotx file from within the MS Word program. This will open the .dotx files as a .dotx file and you will be editing the template it's self. If you accidently overwrite the .dotx file you can download it from our website and place it back into the proper folder on the PC

We update all Government files 2 month before the new year for you to download. We will notify you in an email with links to the new files. These files will be archived ZIP files. Unzip the files and place them into the proper folders. Depending on which package you purchased you may receive an email download link to each package.

To use a word template (Dotx), or a word document (Doc, Docx) on Google Docs you need to upload it to your Google Drive and open it using Google Docs. Google Docs will break some of the formatting, such as fillable and dropdown fields. We recommend using Office 365 to use word Doc, Docx, Dotx.
