Why use a Dotx file and not Docx or Doc?
A .dotx is a Template file that Microsoft Office uses for Word Documents. They will not be edited when used properly. When you open a .dotx file from a folder on your computer it opens the file as a default .doc or .docx file instantly and you can edit that and the .dotx file is unedited and remains the same so you can't mess it up accidently, hence why they call it a Template File.
How to open a .dotx file?

How NOT to open a .dotx file?
Do not open MS Word and then click Open and then search through your folders and open a .dotx file from within the MS Word program. This will open the .dotx files as a .dotx file and you will be editing the template it's self.
